Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Youth movements play a critical role in driving social, political, and economic transformation in societies. In Sokoto South Local Government, youth groups have historically been at the forefront of advocacy for better governance, education, and employment opportunities. Print media serves as a significant medium for documenting, analyzing, and disseminating information about these movements. By providing coverage of their activities, objectives, and challenges, print media shapes public perceptions and influences the policy discourse around youth activism (Aliyu & Bashir, 2023). However, the portrayal of youth movements in print media often varies, with some narratives framing them positively as agents of change, while others focus on negative stereotypes such as violence and unruliness. This study examines the representation of youth movements in Sokoto South’s print media, exploring how coverage influences societal attitudes and contributes to the visibility of youth advocacy.
